Sonya Sklaroff lives and works in New York City . Her paintings have
been exhibited at major museums and galleries around the world,
including: Arnot Art Museum ;
Albright Knox Art Gallery; Flint Institute of Arts. Sklaroff’s work is
also included in national and international permanent collections of
corporations and governments.
She has been reviewed in major publications, including The New York
Times and The Washington Post. She holds a BFA from the Rhode
Island School of Design and an
MFA from Parsons School of Design.
Walking down Sonya Sklaroff’s New York City sidewalks, the ordinarily
overlooked water towers become more prominent, the street lights more
vibrant, the arrangement of the buildings more aesthetic than economic.
Each painting is an experiment in composition, an investigation of light
and dark, complimentary colors, and negative space. Sklaroff creates
portraits of New York with a vitality and unnerving force that alter our
perception in subtle but lasting ways
Sklaroff’s most recent work captures the breadth and expanse, both
physical and emotional, of our city. The complex and contrasting patterns
throughout the cityscape are shown with a panoramic dimensionality that
reflects a great inter-connected community. Depicting the city from its
rooftops, Skarloff’s paintings contextualize her interpretation of the
romantic cityscape; the profound and the gritty, the pre-war and the post-
modern, the natural and the man-made all coexist within a swarming
ecosystem of complements, contradiction, and creativity.
Jenkins Johnson Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of painter Sonya Sklaroff’s recent oil-on-panel urban landscapes.
An opening reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, October 28 from 6 to 8pm.
