Regiane Yuki Sabanai Presents Artist / architect Mark Becker
|
I was born in New York City and grew up in the Dick Van Dyke suburb of New Rochelle, New York. After graduating from New Rochelle
High School I attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and graduated with honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder,
College of Environmental Design, with a major in architecture.
I opened Mark Becker Designs, Inc in 1984, doing mostly architectural commissions but since then my practice has grown to include not only
architectural design, but functional art furniture design, painting, sculpture and architectural photography.

My interest in architecture has always gravitated toward the more exotic, attempting to design spaces that exist beyond the functional. I've
designed round buildings and unique structures that take advantage, in a sculptural way, of the environments in which they exist. My intent has
been to treat buildings as three dimensional sculptural experiences. I wandered into furniture design partly because I became increasingly
disillusioned with the restrictive nature of the design review process which is so prevalent in my area of the country. I began to get commissions
to design furniture and found the freedom and scale of furniture design very rewarding. Some of those early pieces found their way into gallery
shows and publication and so I was encouraged to continue. Early tables led to light fixtures, beds, clocks, and dressers. I've designed one of a
kind, limited production, and mass produced pieces.

Photography was a natural outgrowth of my architectural practice. As I got more
proficient with my large format camera, and as word spread, I received more and
more commissions to shoot buildings and the built environment. I've worked for
architects nationwide, building product manufacturers, advertising agencies, and
fortune 500 companies. My work has been published in several dozen publications.
My early investigations into painting and sculpture were done strictly for myself
and shared with those immediately around me.
When I'm not doing all of the above I love to pedal the roadways of Marin,
Sonoma, and Napa counties in California and run the trails of Mount Tamalpais.
When I have even more free time I love to travel to exotic tropical islands to see
new cultures and colorful tropical fish in their native world.
