The artist, Ellen E. Rand, lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, where she is also the owner and director of the gallery,
ART 101.
She came to painting after studying stage design at Sarah Lawrence College and subsequently working in the theatre for
a number of years. The solitude of painting was infinitely more satisfying than the high pitch of the theatrical backstage.
She is entirely self-taught, having spent many hundreds of hours shut away from the world, painting and scraping and
re-painting until she learned how to do it.

Over the years, her work has undergone changes in material and subject -- from large lyrical abstract acrylics, to the over-
size nude series in oil, to the night sky landscapes on small wooden panels, but the subject remains the same; it is really
light – the light of the moment and how it is absorbed by the painter, becoming inner light that is then reflected back onto
the landscape -- of the painting

The new work was begun early in 2010. After starting ART 101 in 2004, painting had to be put aside in order to
concentrate on the gallery and the artists. When finally the docket was clear and there was time to paint it was hard to
find the new direction. All of the older work seemed complete; there was no need to continue any of it. Wondering what
to do with some discarded panels of unfinished work, she began to cover them with rice paper and paint on top of that --
and eureka! The partially or wholly obscured painting underneath influences the new, thus adding yet another layer to
the many layers of paint and pigment

“I want the viewer to be drawn into the paintings, through the many layers, some of which are clear and some suggested.
I want the paintings to be mysterious. They change as you look at them.”
Rand has exhibited in New England and New York since 1972.
