Lang Leav
Charlie's Widow チャーリーズウィドウ
But sadly Charlie would soon find
Beneath her sugar-coated lies
Candy Wrappers on the floor
Left by suitors who came to call
Violet ヴァイオレット
Not a single one
She cared about
She'd chew them up
And spit them out
Veruca ヴェルーカ
We see she wears to our chagrin
A little hat of squirrel skin
Around her neck sits like a wreath
A necklace made of Oompa's teeth
Those who come across my work for the first time say it feels strangely familiar. Almost like Déjà vu. Fairytale characters
firmly stapled in your memory smile sweetly at you from a canvas. Reminding you of places you have forgotten to visit for a
very long time.

It is only when you are drawn in closer that you begin to notice the little details. A slight upturn of red rose lips begin to look
more like a snarl and a blood stained handkerchief leaves you with a peculiar sense of unease.

My work is born from a compulsive desire to create. It carries a deep appreciation of traditional methods used by artisans for
centuries. Writing, weaving, painting, binding of books and an insatiable passion for storytelling.

Contemporary Sydney artist, Lang Leav is the inspiration behind the enchanting world of Akina. Her imagination stretches across a variety of disciplines
encompassing fashion, art, poetry and books. Frequently invited to exhibit at high profile exhibitions locally and overseas, she has since built up a loyal
following of international fans. Her latest book, Charlie's Widow, was hand presented to iconic film director Tim Burton at the opening of his exhibition at the
Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

Known for her versatility, Lang has completed a wide range of projects both independently and through a number of exciting collaborations. The distinct
nature of her work alternates between the whimsical and melancholy, expressing an underlying complexity beneath its child-like facade.

Lang is a recipient of The Qantas Spirit of Youth Award and was later granted a prestigious Churchill Fellowship. Her fashion label Akina has achieved critical
and commercial success, stocked in key boutiques around Australia and later in cutting edge Harajuku, Japan.

In December 2010, Lang completed two shows in Santa Monica for the renowned Copro gallery. In January she was hand-picked to exhibit in the landmark
'Playboy Redux' curated by The Warhol Museum and Playboy Enterprises; alongside contemporary greats such as Gary Baseman, Luke Cheuh, Shag,
Nouar, Glenn Barr and Tara McPherson
