Today I saw a pair of bright yellow, patent leather pumps exiting a
coffee shop off of Canal St. The woman glided across the street,
coffee in hand, confident, secure, and simply extraordinary. She
tugged at her dark gray tweed overcoat and adjusted the hint of a
yellow and white scarf showing just below her chin. My thoughts on
where this woman could be headed were endless. I imagined her entering
a meeting with important clientele, sitting down to a romantic dinner
with her husband, or even catching up with old friends at a nearby
bar. All of which were possible due to her remarkable observation to
detail. Her pencil skirt, just visible below the coat, created the
perfect direction that lead your eyes down her stockings onto her
bright yellow, patent leather pumps. The color yellow is said to
psychically create optimism, energy and spark creative thoughts in the
human psyche. In the cold days of late January, these shoes radiated a
glow to turn this woman into a piece of art.
The signature red soles revealed the French footwear designer,
Christian Louboutin. As any shoe buff knows, Louboutin can be more on
the expensive side of the shoe spectrum. For anyone not familiar with
the designer, Christian Louboutin started his business in the early
1990s in Paris. His goal was to bring silhouettes back into fashion
and to “make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as
long as he can”. He is most famous for his evening footwear. My mind
began to wander as I watched the woman turn a corner and continue her
life on those beautiful bright yellow, patent leather pumps.
As my shoe fixation had been unleashed, I decided to go on a scavenger
hunt. I strolled down the New York City sidewalks window browsing the
downtown stores. But as a young woman living on her own in such a
city, money for shoes was something I was quite short on. However I
was not discouraged. I decided to try my luck at a nearby thrift
store, curious to see if a pair of Louboutin could have turned up on
their shelves. In my expeditions throughout the years I’ve learned
that anything you can buy brand new in New York City you can find in
perfect condition at a second hand store.

I had been having some good luck lately in the second hand clothes
variety, so as the door swung shut behind me I was optimistic about my
search. I headed straight back to the shoe rack, as to not get
distracted by all the beautiful garments hanging in the front, and
began scanning the shelves one at a time. For me, finding second hand
items in good condition is always much more exhilarating than from a
regular store. This is because it’s a game of luck, fate and timing.

I would never know if the woman I held the door open for on her way out
had seen the one thing my treasure hunt was all about only moments
before me. Yet I was not disheartened. I continued to scan the shelves
when suddenly my eyes were caught by a pair of deep purple, suede
pumps. As I lifted them from their space on the rack I saw a flash of
red from the soles. My scavenger hunt had reached its pinnacle moment.
I couldn’t help grinning with excitement as I walked over to the
counter holding an affordable pair of perfect condition Louboutin
pumps in my hand.

So whether entering a meeting with important clientele, sitting down
to a romantic dinner with my boyfriend, or meeting up with friends at
a bar, I was ready to take on the world one confident step at a time.
All because of the beautiful woman, her bright yellow, patent leather
pumps, and my love for turning a shopping trip into an adventure
through some of the countries best second hand stores.
