Entry Points (Inspiration, Creation and Craft):

Entry Points (Inspiration, Creation and Craft)
This class is a celebration of the ineffability of dance, which allows for a
broad range of artistic ideas to fall under its umbrella and then employ
the choreographic form to harness its potential. First we must identify
"The Idea" and commit to a rigorous and playful exploration that allows
it to develop and take shape. This course aims to help each individual
distinguish their own voice, inspirations and subsequent process. We
will “shop” various entry points into the creative process. Perspectives
about craft, collaboration and composition will be introduced, explored
and discussed with an eye toward clarifying a distinct point of view and
opinion; what works for us? what do we cast off? Participants will
employ compositional tricks for creating movement and design that
afford each an opportunity to direct in a group. Throughout we will be
asking, “what is dance?” No assumptions will be made; theater,
narrative, emotion, props, virtuosity, and the mundane will all be invited
in for consideration. Students will keep a journal of observation
documenting interests, experiences and creating a personal tool belt
for choreographing.
