Official Selection at 2008 Tribeca and Silverdocs film festivals, and winner of numerous "Best Documentary" awards, UNDER OUR SKIN opens in NYC on June 19 at the IFC Center, and in LA on June 26 at the Laemmle Music Hall. Other cities will follow. A dramatic tale of microbes, medicine and money, UNDER OUR SKIN investigates the untold story of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS, West Nile Virus, and avian and swine flu combined. The documentary provides a powerful and often terrifying look not only at the science and politics of the disease, but also the personal stories of those whose lives have been affected and nearly destroyed. Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told that their symptoms are “all in their head.” From patients who once led active lives but now can barely walk, to a few brave doctors who risk their medical licenses to treat them, the film uncovers a hidden world that will astound viewers. While exposing a broken medical research system, the film also gives voice to those who believe that instead of a crisis, Lyme is simply a "disease du jour," over diagnosed and over treated, and contributing to another crisis: the creation of antibiotic-resistant superbugs. With skill and cinematic beauty, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our health care system and a medical establishment all too willing to put profits ahead of patients. A real-life summer horror film, UNDER OUR SKIN is sure to get under yours. |
