From Stepping Out to Step Mom
I was a single woman for a long time, enjoying a great lifestyle with dual careers as a recruiter AND travel
writer. Free time and evenings were often spent with my small and offbeat family or good friends and good
drinks. Ok, maybe I didn’t have that many drinks and I did spend many nights at home alone, but I promise I
was happy doing nothing ALONE.
I rarely subscribed to the modern day single woman’s ideology and statements. Statements such as : “I don’t
need a man to complete me, and I can take care of myself.” It was a given to me that I was self-sufficient
and probably have been since a very young age, enhanced by the fact that my parents
divorced when I was 8.
Alhough I considered myself a happy and independent woman, I still wanted a husband and family. When I finally met the man
I'd fall in love with and marry, I didn't anticipate he would come as a package deal which meant instant stepmom status for me,
yahhh!
And I had no idea what I was doing. Or did I? Did I learn from my mother who raised us in large part on her own? Did my
training as a clinical social worker help me understand the needs of both children from divorced families as well as the needs of
woman who gets married later in life and seeks balance as not to lose sight of her past completely?

Do you wish on stars and birthday candles? Do you make wishes on wishing flowers and blow them out to the universe? Do
you take a moment each day to give thanks for what you have and what you want to have? As Thanksgiving approaches we are
reminded to be thankful for all we have; our homes, families, pets, friends, health, clothes, food, a job and the ability to endure
tough times in life and know we will successfully come through the other side better than we were before.
Life is sometimes so busy, stressful and overwhelming that we run through each day without enjoying any part of it or feeling
love for a precious person in your day. It is so important to be conscious and present in each moment as we go through our day
and know that each experience good or bad is part of who we are, what we are feeling and calling into our lives. If you notice
more unhappy moments than happy, loving moments, maybe you need to pay attention to how you feel and what you are giving
out. Happiness brings happiness and negativity draws negativity; it is actually physics.

There are so many things in life which we have no control over and that can sometimes get to
the core of who we are and rattle us. A diagnosis of a medical condition given to you or
someone you love, a partner in a relationship who is irrational and out of control, a move, a
divorce, losing a job, a home or loss of a loved one.

Come and enjoy a stay at our Queen Ann Victorian style home, built in 1897 by J. A. Decker.
He was a wealthy lumber baron and banker, who built this impressive 30 room home for his family. As
you arrive, you will be welcomed by the front wrap around porch with pedestal columns and a double
entry with cut glass. As you enter, you will be embraced with unique cherry and oak woodwork, stained
glass windows, and beautiful antiques throughout. The large stained glass window that beautifies the grand
cherry staircase, welcomes you to the second and third floors. This is where the main guest rooms are
located. The third floor was originally a ballroom, which was later modified into guest rooms. These
modifications were made by the Mandeville family who bought the home in the early 1900s. As a result
of the stock market crash,the home was then converted into a bed and breakfast.

The Severance House is approximately two miles from the entrance to Gore Mountain Ski Area and less than 30 minutes from many of
the resorts, beaches and town of Lake George. This historic Adirondack home sits on 95 acres of woodlands and open fields. The
Severance House offers easy access to hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing by simply stepping out the back door.

dogs in service. Co-author, Debra Bach also suffered from Lyme Disease. Dr. Bach chairs the
Governor’s sub-committee on Education for Lyme Disease. Reviver Records Productions is
coordinating the book project on behalf of Debra and Gregory Bach. Published by the Virginia-based
Mascot Books, “The Bravest Rescue Puppy” was purposefully written to help teach people about
